Matting is often described as tangling.

In practice, that description rarely matches what we observe.

At TANDEM Cat®, we frequently explain matting using a different model:

Mats do not primarily twist. They fuse.

This concept forms the foundation of what we call the Felting Model of Feline Matting—an educational framework that helps explain how severe matting develops and why it can become so physically restrictive.

Understanding Felting

Felting is one of the oldest textile processes in human history.

Long before spinning or weaving, people discovered that loose animal fibers could be transformed into dense fabric through a combination of:

  • Moisture
  • Pressure
  • Friction
  • Time

As fibers are repeatedly compressed and moved against one another, they begin to interlock. What starts as a soft, airy material gradually becomes dense, compact, and difficult to separate.

The fibers do not simply knot.

They bind.

How Felting Occurs in Feline Coats

Many feline coats—particularly those of long-haired and double-coated cats—contain the same ingredients required for felting.

These include:

  • Fine undercoat fibers
  • Natural skin oils

  • Continuous pressure against the coat

Over time, the coat experiences thousands of cycles of compression.

A cat lies down.

The coat compresses.

The cat curls up.

Eventually, what was once soft and freely moving becomes dense and compacted.
