Understanding Final Grooming Recommendations

Understanding Final Grooming Recommendations

Many cats are initially scheduled based on photos, descriptions, or previous appointment history. However, the final grooming recommendation is determined after an in-person assessment by the Cats in the City and TANDEM Cat® grooming team.

This assessment allows us to evaluate the cat’s actual condition, identify concerns that may not be visible in photographs, and recommend the service that will best support the cat’s comfort, safety, and long-term coat health.

What Is a Final Grooming Recommendation?

A final grooming recommendation is our professional assessment of the care a cat needs after we have had the opportunity to evaluate them in person.

While preliminary estimates are based on available information, final recommendations are based on direct observation.

These recommendations consider:

  • Coat condition
  • Matting severity
  • Undercoat retention
  • Claw condition
  • Skin and coat health
  • Mobility and comfort
  • Age-related considerations
  • Behavioral observations
  • Medical considerations

Our goal is to match the service to the cat—not the other way around.

Why Recommendations Sometimes Change

One of the most common misconceptions is that a cat’s grooming needs can always be determined from photographs.

In reality, many significant conditions are discovered only during hands-on assessment.

Examples include:

Hidden Matting

A coat may appear relatively normal on the surface while significant matting exists underneath.

Coat Compression

Some cats develop dense undercoat retention and coat compaction without visible tangles.

Embedded Claws

Overgrown claws may become embedded in surrounding tissue without being immediately apparent.

Mobility Limitations

Senior cats, arthritic cats, and medically complex cats often require modifications to the grooming plan.

Behavioral Considerations

A cat’s comfort level, sound sensitivity, and handling tolerance may influence how services are performed.

Why We May Recommend a Different Service

Occasionally a cat arrives scheduled for one service but is ultimately recommended for another.

Examples may include:

  • A bath and deshed becoming a Total Reset™
  • A maintenance groom becoming a mat removal appointment
  • A nail trim revealing embedded claws
  • A routine groom uncovering significant coat compression
  • A sanitary trim requiring additional coat restoration work

These recommendations are made because they better address the cat’s actual needs.

The Goal Is Not More Service

At TANDEM Cat®, final recommendations are not designed to maximize services.

They are designed to maximize outcomes.

Our focus is on:

  • Restoring comfort
  • Supporting mobility
  • Improving coat function
  • Reducing physical burden
  • Supporting quality of life

In many cases, addressing an underlying issue today can help prevent more extensive intervention later.

Understanding Total Reset™ Recommendations

One of the most common recommendation changes involves the Total Reset™ service.

A Total Reset™ may be recommended when we identify:

  • Significant matting
  • Advanced coat compression
  • Extensive undercoat retention
  • Embedded claws
  • Hygiene concerns
  • Multiple overlapping coat issues

The purpose of a Total Reset™ is not cosmetic transformation.

It is the restoration of comfort, coat function, and physical freedom.

Trauma-Informed Decision Making

Our recommendations are informed by more than coat condition alone.

We also consider:

  • Stress levels
  • Emotional regulation
  • Previous grooming experiences
  • Medical status
  • Age-related changes
  • Overall tolerance for handling

Sometimes the safest recommendation is not the most aggressive one.

Sometimes a staged approach better serves the cat.

Our goal is always to balance effectiveness with emotional and physical wellbeing.

What Happens If You Have Questions?

We encourage guardians to ask questions about any recommendation.

Our team is happy to explain:

  • What we observed
  • Why the recommendation was made
  • What alternatives may exist
  • What outcomes can reasonably be expected

We believe informed guardians make better decisions for their cats.

Our Philosophy

At Cats in the City and TANDEM Cat®, grooming recommendations are not based on breed, assumptions, or cosmetic preferences.

They are based on observation.

Every recommendation is intended to answer a simple question:

What does this cat need right now to be more comfortable, more functional, and more successful moving forward?

How Final Grooming Recommendations Are Determined

A final grooming recommendation is based on direct observation rather than photographs alone. After completing an in-person assessment, our grooming team evaluates coat condition, matting severity, claw health, mobility, behavioral considerations, and overall comfort to determine which service will best support the individual cat.

Before the Appointment

Most cats begin with a preliminary estimate based on photographs, intake information, and previous grooming history. These resources explain how initial recommendations are developed and why estimates remain flexible until an in-person evaluation is completed.

What We Evaluate During Assessment

Many important grooming findings cannot be fully identified through photographs. Hands-on assessment allows us to identify hidden coat conditions, claw concerns, mobility limitations, and other factors that influence grooming recommendations.

Common Reasons Recommendations Change

The most common recommendation changes occur when previously hidden conditions are discovered during assessment. These findings may affect both grooming complexity and the services required to restore comfort and coat function.

A Total Reset™ may be recommended when coat compression, advanced matting, retained undercoat, embedded claws, hygiene concerns, or multiple overlapping issues are identified. The objective is restoration of comfort, mobility, and coat function rather than cosmetic appearance alone.

Trauma-Informed Recommendations

Final recommendations consider more than coat condition alone. Emotional regulation, medical status, age-related changes, handling tolerance, and overall wellbeing all contribute to the care plan developed for each cat.
