HydroFriction™ is a TANDEM Touch™ coat decompression technique used by Cats in the City and TANDEM Cat® Clinical Grooming to help release trapped undercoat through warm water, precision handling, and controlled friction.
It is not simply a bath.
HydroFriction™ is used when a cat’s coat needs water-mediated support to soften, separate, and release compressed undercoat that may not respond fully to dry brushing alone.
Some cats develop coat compression when shed undercoat becomes trapped inside the coat instead of releasing naturally.
Over time, this trapped coat can become dense, heavy, greasy, sticky, clumpy, or difficult to comb through.
You may notice:
Excessive shedding
Frequent hairballs
Greasy or sticky coat texture
Clumps or sections forming in the coat
Repeated small mats
Reduced self-grooming
Discomfort when touched
A coat that still feels thick after brushing
These signs may indicate that the coat needs more than surface-level deshedding.
HydroFriction™ uses warm water to help soften and open the coat.
Once the coat is properly hydrated, controlled friction techniques are used to help separate and release trapped undercoat. The process may also include rinsing away loosened hair, dander, debris, and buildup.
Depending on your cat’s needs, HydroFriction™ may be followed by drying, coat expansion, and AirFriction™ support.
Each session is adjusted to the cat’s coat type, age, tolerance, skin sensitivity, and comfort level.
No.
A standard bath focuses mainly on cleaning the coat.
HydroFriction™ focuses on coat release and coat function. While the coat may be cleaned during the process, the purpose is to help restore movement, airflow, separation, and comfort within the coat.
The same water that simply washes one cat may help decompress another cat’s coat when applied with the correct technique, pacing, and handling.
HydroFriction™ may help support:
Reduced shedding
Fewer hairballs
Improved coat airflow
Better skin environment
Less clumping and tangling
Reduced risk of future matting
Improved comfort and mobility
Easier self-grooming
The goal is to help the coat feel lighter, looser, and easier for the cat to live in.
HydroFriction™ may be especially helpful for:
Long-haired cats
Double-coated cats
Senior cats
Cats with thick seasonal shedding
Cats with greasy or sticky coat texture
Cats prone to hairballs
Cats with recurring mats
Cats whose coats feel dense, heavy, or compressed
Cats who cannot maintain their coats effectively on their own
Cats do not need to be severely matted to benefit. HydroFriction™ is often most helpful before matting becomes advanced.
HydroFriction™ can be appropriate for many senior cats when performed with feline-specific handling, careful pacing, and attention to comfort.
Older cats may groom less effectively because of stiffness, arthritis, illness, dental discomfort, weight changes, or reduced flexibility. Releasing trapped coat burden may help improve comfort.
Our team adjusts the session based on the cat’s tolerance and physical condition.
No. Shedding is normal.
The goal is not to stop shedding entirely. The goal is to reduce trapped, accumulated shed hair so the coat can function more normally and the cat carries less coat burden.
It may help reduce hairball frequency in some cats by removing excess loose and trapped hair before the cat ingests it during grooming.
However, hairballs can have multiple causes. Persistent vomiting, appetite changes, weight loss, or signs of illness should be discussed with your veterinarian.
HydroFriction™ is one modality within TANDEM Cat® Coat Decompression™.
Depending on your cat’s coat condition, HydroFriction™ may be combined with:
Manual dry coat release for precision undercoat separation.
Controlled airflow used to lift, expand, and remove loosened undercoat after release.
These TANDEM Touch™ modalities allow our team to adapt the grooming session to the cat’s coat, body, and comfort.

HydroFriction™ is water-mediated coat decompression.
It helps release trapped undercoat, support coat airflow, reduce coat burden, and improve comfort.
Less shed. More comfort. Better coat function.
HydroFriction™ is one of the core TANDEM Touch™ modalities used within the TANDEM Cat® Coat Decompression™ system. These related resources explore coat compression, trapped undercoat, matting, feline comfort, and the role coat restoration may play in overall quality of life.
Many coats develop compression long before visible matting appears. These articles explain how friction, moisture, pressure, and retained undercoat contribute to progressive coat restriction.
HydroFriction™ is one component of the TANDEM Touch™ coat restoration system. Depending on coat condition, additional modalities may be used to release trapped undercoat and restore coat function.
For some cats, trapped undercoat and coat restriction may contribute to discomfort, reduced mobility, decreased grooming, and changes in behavior. These resources explore the relationship between physical burden and feline wellbeing.
HydroFriction™ is performed within the TANDEM Cat® trauma-informed grooming model, which emphasizes regulation, observation, pacing, and individualized feline care.
